Sonamarg
The meadow of gold
Sonamarg — the 'Meadow of Gold' — is the last great valley before the mountains turn to high desert. Snow-fed rivers braid across the floor, glaciers hang from the ridges, and the Sindh river runs cold and clear past stands of silver birch.
It is both a serene day-trip from Srinagar and the staging point for the dramatic Zoji La pass — the road that carries travellers onward to Kargil, Drass and Ladakh.
Thajiwas Glacier
The signature excursion is to Thajiwas Glacier, reached on foot or by pony across flower meadows to a wall of snow that survives through summer. It is one of the most accessible glaciers in Kashmir and a highlight for first-time mountain travellers.
Gateway to Ladakh
Sonamarg marks the start of the climb to Zoji La (3,528 m). If your trip continues to Leh, this is where the valley scenery gives way to stark, beautiful high-altitude terrain — our drivers are seasoned on this demanding stretch and time the crossing for the safest conditions.
