Pangong Lake

The colour-shifting lake

Pangong Tso is the image that draws travellers to Ladakh — a 134 km ribbon of water at 4,350 m that shifts from turquoise to deep indigo as the light moves. Bare ochre mountains drop straight into the lake, and the silence is total.

Reached from Leh over the Chang La pass, Pangong is a long but unforgettable drive. Most travellers camp a night on the shore to catch the colours at sunset, the stars after dark, and the lake glassy-still at dawn.

The drive over Chang La

The road climbs over Chang La (5,360 m) — one of the highest motorable passes anywhere — before descending to the lake at Spangmik. It is demanding terrain; our Ladakh drivers carry oxygen, watch the weather, and pace the journey so the altitude stays manageable.

A night on the shore

Stay in a shoreline camp or homestay at Spangmik, Man or Merak. Sunset and sunrise are the magic hours for the lake's colour play, and the night sky here is among the darkest in the country. Permits are required and arranged in advance as part of your package.
