Pahalgam

Valley of shepherds

Pahalgam sits where the East and West Lidder rivers meet, a green valley of shepherds, deodar forest and meadow that has long been a favourite Kashmiri retreat. The air is cool, the river is loud, and the side-valleys are some of the prettiest drives in India.

It is also the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, and a relaxed counterpoint to busier Srinagar — ideal for families, honeymooners and anyone who wants the valley at walking pace.

The three valleys

Drive out to Betaab Valley, named for the film shot among its lawns and streams; continue to Chandanwari with its snow bridge and the Amarnath trailhead; and visit Aru, a meadow hamlet and base for treks toward Kolahoi. Local cabs are required beyond Pahalgam town — we coordinate the union taxi so your day flows smoothly.

By the Lidder

Closer in, walk the riverside, ride to Baisaran's pine 'mini Switzerland' meadow, try trout fishing, or tee off at the Pahalgam golf course. Evenings are for slow chai by the water as the light fades over the ridgelines.
